Reality Check: Christmas is Supposed to be Fun!

7 Dec

Everywhere I go, it seems people are lamenting the fast approaching Christmas holiday.

“Where did November go?”

“Less than 20 days!”

And, my personal favorite, “Are you ready??”

Ready for what? The holiday that will come whether I stay in bed for the next three weeks or work myself into a ball of stress?

Christmas is supposed to be fun, people.

I say this as someone who has the Christmas to-do list, just like everyone else. There are gifts to buy, wrap and ship. There are cookies to bake, cards to send and parties to attend. And there are decorations, as much as I love them, that won’t put themselves up.

But the reality is all these things don’t HAVE to be done.

We do them for our own enjoyment and for the enjoyment of the people we love.

So let’s start enjoying them!

I’m making it a personal goal to try to enjoy the season of Christmas a little bit more this year. Because, really, Christmas is just one day, and then it’s practically January.

And who likes January? (Sorry January babies).

Your to-do list won’t get any shorter, but maybe your perspective on it will.

My yoga teacher said in class this week, “Strive to find serenity in every situation.” I’m going to try it next time I’m in a crowded grocery store, how about you?

So I guess this is my little Public Service Announcement – for myself as much as anyone.

Take a deep breath and notice all the pretty every day of this holiday season.

And have fun!

What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?

UPDATE: I wrote this last night and I woke up this morning to a yard full of snow! How’s that for pretty?
