The Trick to Open Shelving

9 Apr

My new place has a beautiful mix of open shelving and cabinets in the kitchen.

I’ve never been a fan of open shelving, being the neat nik that I am. But I think I’ve discovered the trick:

The trick to open shelving is curating the space just as you would a book shelf or a hall table. Carefully selecting the objects that were born to be displayed – like cute little teacups or colorful plates – not the utilitarian kitchen items like frying pans or can openers.

I’m not into the monochromatic look for everything. I rather like the eclectic, quirky look of different colors and patterns playing off of each other in a neat, uncluttered way.

How pretty is that?

Once something I avoided, I’m now excited about showing off my pretty plates and coffee mugs, mixed in with a mason jar (or seven). Pretty and functional, the perfect combo for a cozy kitchen.

Do you have open shelves in your kitchen? What’s on display?

love this! We have awful cupboards and I am hoping to tear the doors off paint and be able to pull something just as neat off!
